Biointensive and Organically Acceptable Pest Management Literacy Training

Rex Dufour, National Center for Appropriate Technology

NCAT implemented a Biointensive and Organically Acceptable Pest Management Literacy Training for Hispanic organic growers and those in training. Objectives included:

– Increasing knowledge of pest versus beneficial organisms.
– Providing information on proactive and reactive organic pest management options.
– Introducing culturally accessible sources of technical information.

This initiative addresses the lack of Biointensive IPM resources available in Spanish, which are often not accessible to Latino farmers or farmworkers. The training produced two key outcomes: a series of four workshops and a graphic-rich, text-light document in Spanish on organic IPM. The workshops were held at the ALBA facility in Salinas in 2003, covering:

– July: Pest and Beneficial Insects
– August: Plant Diseases
– September: Weeds
– October: Vertebrate Pests
