Cereal Cover Crops for Weed Control in Organic and Conventional Dry Bean Production Systems

While a variety of species are used as cover crops, cereal species are among the most popular across U.S. cropping systems due to their predictable agronomic characteristics, high biomass production, and weed-suppressive capabilities. This study evaluated winter wheat, barley, and triticale as winter cover crops in a dry bean production system.

Organic vegetable growers in Alaska face significant production challenges, given the state’s extremely short growing season. This study evaluated cover cropping as a viable management practice for Alaskan vegetable growers, assessing the performance of several cool- and warm-season cover crop mixes on weed suppression and soil health in subsequent brassica crop growing seasons.
