Organic training for Montana’s agricultural technical service providers

Jonda Crosby, Alternative Energy Resources Organization

For the past 15 years, AERO members in Montana have developed sustainable and organic production systems and shared their work with other producers. Although acreage transitioning to these practices has increased, many agricultural service providers acknowledge they lack the knowledge to assist farmers.

This project aimed to enhance the knowledge of agriculture technical providers in Montana about sustainable and organic practices through hands-on training. A network of informed providers is essential for further adoption of these principles, and we achieved notable success.

AERO and partners hosted fourteen sustainable and organic field tours in 2003, ten in 2004, a statewide training in 2003, and two “transitioning to Organic” workshops in 2005. We also sponsored two statewide organic conferences in 2003 and 2005, focusing on sustainable agriculture relating to dryland and livestock production. Over 750 participants attended these events, including NRCS, Extension staff, land grant researchers, farmers, ranchers, and various organizations.

Key accomplishments include effective evaluation and improvement strategies, innovative educational methods, collaborative leadership among diverse groups, and participation from over 750 individuals.

Matching support came from Western SARE, Montana NRCS, and Washington State University Center for Risk Management.
